The Altering Group - Counselling & Development Organisation

About Us

The Altering Group was founded with a deep commitment to supporting young people and adults, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds or underrepresented groups, with the aim of addressing the lack of opportunities, guidance and support for those individuals.

We offer a comprehensive support service that addresses multiple needs, from youth empowerment, life skills, financial literacy, employment support and support for vulnerable people, to low-cost counselling, youth mentoring, youth and adult workshops and training.

We welcome all individuals, regardless of their personal circumstances, as we believe everyone has the right to access the support and services they need.

We are committed to making a positive impact in the lives of our service users, in communities and in society.

Our Inspiration

The organisation was founded following the founders' personal experiences.  They witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by both young people and adults, who lacked opportunities and guidance. With a personal history of needing the services that The Altering Group now provides, the founders were inspired to create a safe and inclusive space, that aims to tackle oppression, stigma, and a lack of opportunities, so all young people and adults can get the support they need to reach their full potential.

Our Mission and Vision

Our mission is clear: to empower both adults and young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds and oppressed groups, through our services. We aim to support young people to avoid negative paths, develop essential life skills, prepare for employment, access mental health support and gain financial knowledge, in order to create equal opportunities and success.

Through our services, we aim to reduce risks such as criminal exploitation, knife crime, abuse, neglect, and gang violence, and provide pathways for success.

We are also dedicated to supporting adults through our workshops and low-cost counselling services, to achieve their full potential. We aim to improve mental health and wellbeing, promote growth and self-esteem, build community and inspire both young people and adults.  We also offer training and workshops within other organisations to support service development, workplace culture and increase employee's knowledge and skills.

Our vision is to create a world where everyone, regardless of their background and upbringing, has the resources and support they need to thrive. We value inclusivity, diversity, and a commitment to combatting oppression and stigma and making a difference in communities and society.

Key Programs & Initiatives

  • Youth Workshops: Our youth workshops support young people through teaching, mentoring and applying financial literacy, life skills, mental health awareness and support, employment preparation and much more.
  • Adult Workshops: Our adult workshops provide adults, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, with the tools and skills needed to manage their difficulties, and the support and  empowerment to create opportunities for positive change and success.
  • Youth Mentoring: Our youth mentoring program provides one-to-one guidance for young people, helping them build confidence, resilience, and essential life skills while navigating challenges such as mental health, risk of exploitation, and future aspirations.
  • Mental Health Support: We offer low-cost counselling services and mental health workshops to promote well-being, improved mental health and reduce stigma.
  • Self-Help Resources: Our self-help reflective journal, complete with prompts, mood trackers, and habit trackers, is designed to improve well-being and facilitate personal growth.
  • Training: Our training programs provide other services, providers and businesses with essential skills training to support their development and service experience.

What Sets Us Apart

Our commitment to inclusivity, diversity, and combatting oppression sets us apart. We prioritise the voices and experiences of our service users, ensuring that our services address and reflect their challenges and needs.
