A mentor is someone who takes on the role of a trusted adviser, supporter, teacher and "wise counsel" to another person. They are a person with relevant skills, experience and perspectives. They adopt a role in supporting the learning, deevelopment and success of the young person they are mentoring, focusing on their needs, goals and challenges. They help to bring out the young person's skills, talent and abilities through the mentoring relationship.
They provide appropriate assistance to the mentee in a way that helps them to reach their desiered outcome, through a number of ways. This can include, sharing their specific experience or knwoledge on a topic, their perspectives, helping them to learn and develop from specific qualities and attributes, or teaching skills such as financial literacy etc.
They may share stories, challenge their thinking, provide feedback and give advice.
At The Altering Group, we collaborate closely with schools, statutory bodies, and parents or carers to deliver our mentoring services. This partnership approach ensures that each young person receives comprehensive support tailored to their unique needs, fostering a cohesive network dedicated to their personal and professional development. By engaging all stakeholders, we create a unified effort to empower youth and facilitate positive outcomes.
The duration of mentoring is flexible and tailored to the needs of each young person. While some may benefit from short-term support over a few weeks or months, others may require ongoing guidance for a longer period. We work closely with the young person, and others where appropriate, to determine the best timeline for their goals and challenges. Regular reviews ensure the support remains effective and relevant throughout the mentoring journey.
